As I promised last month, I would like to introduce our sabbatical pastor, the Rev. Teddy Kissell, who will be serving Immanuel Church while I am on sabbatical. Before she was ordained, Teddy taught elementary school and preschool, worked in retail sales, and supervised a staff of documentation specialists at a large financial institution. She brings her experience in the workplace to her ministry to others, helping them to grow in their journey of Christian discipleship. Teddy was commissioned as a Minister of Christian Discipleship in 1999, licensed in 2000, and ordained in 2006 by the Houston Association.
As a member of First Congregational Church in Houston, Teddy planned and led the confirmation program for 25 years, taught preschool through adult education classes, and sponsored many individuals to become members. Teddy served as campus minister for United Campus Ministry of Greater Houston for 20 years as a volunteer and 10 years as a professional. She served as part-time pastor of St. John UCC of Houston from 2008-2013, and as part-time interim minister of Bethel UCC, Houston, from 2013-2016.
She also served as sabbatical minister of Plymouth UCC, Spring, during the summer of 2013.
Teddy is an active participant in the life of the Houston Association, having served on the Committee on Ministry and currently serving as the registrar of the Houston Association. She has also served as a supply pastor for various Houston UCC churches and has led worship for the Houston Association women’s retreats at Slumber Falls Camp.
We are indeed fortunate and blessed to have Rev. Kissell provide pastoral care and leadership for the next three months. Teddy brings her warmth and caring to all those to whom she ministers, and she brings her experience in working with persons of all ages, helping them to discover the ways that God is calling them to grow in their faith and discipleship.
One of the benefits of a sabbatical for the congregation is the opportunity to experience the gifts and leadership of a new pastor, and to be challenged to grow and stretch in new ways. The congregation is given the opportunity to welcome a new pastor into their midst, and to learn from her some new and different ways to be the church. And the congregation is also encouraged to become more self-reliant, discovering its own inner strengths and gifts.
Rev. Kissell will be serving on a part-time basis during June, July, and August. She will be in the office on Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. and will be leading the morning worship service on Sunday and attending committee meetings after worship. Teddy will also be available for any pastoral needs as they arise. Her email address is email@example.com and her cell phone is 713-805-1727. Please extend a warm welcome to Rev Kissell and give her your prayers and support, as you continue share the love of Jesus Christ with the community and the world.
Blessings and Peace,
